AIM Level 3 Award

Start with a taster and by the end You'll have the skills to be a grooming assistant or confidently maintain your own dog's coat.

You will be shown how to carry out a visual health check, followed with essential coat prep which includes the brushing, bathing and drying of a variety of different dog breeds and sizes. 

 

As well as how to handle dogs safely you will also see some of the pre- styling prep work such as trimming nails and cleaning ears. You will then be invited to watch the stylists work their magic.

 

At the end of your first taster day you will have an understanding of the world of dog grooming. The further days can run on from the Introductory day or be scheduled to suit your other commitments.

QUALIFICATION UNITS

Carry out basic maintenance of a dog’s coat

  • Visual Health Check

  • Brushing out and de-shedding coats

  • Learning when and how to remove knots and tangles safely

  • Selecting and mixing appropriate shampoos

  • Bathing dogs

  • Drying dogs – this may include using high velocity dryers

  • Using brushes / combs to check coat is correctly prepped and ready for styling

  • Understanding various coat types

Promote and maintain the Health and Wellbeing of Animals

  • Moving dogs between locations

  • Legislation (including The Animal Welfare Act 2006)

  • Health and Safety in the Grooming Salon

Learners should be aged 16 and above – and be comfortable around dogs of all breeds and sizes.

AIM Level 3 Certificate

Achieve the knowledge of basic pet styling to work as a dog groomer or grooming assistant.

Formerly OCN – Open College Network, this qualification covers assessing, recording and planning grooming work, health checking dogs prior to grooming as well as a knowledge of essential first aid.

 

The qualification is made up of a range of theoretical and practical units related to canine health & wellbeing and the styling of dog’s coats.

QUALIFICATION UNITS

  • Welcoming, receiving and caring for customers

  • Promoting and maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals

  • Health checking a dog

  • Carry out basic grooms on various breeds

  • Assessing, planning and recording grooming plans and evidence of completed grooms

  • Canine First Aid Certificate

On successful completion of this qualification course the learner may elect to progress on to the Level 3 Diploma – or choose to go directly in to employment and seek work in a grooming salon or similar environment.

 Learners should be aged 17 and above – and be comfortable around dogs of all breeds and sizes.

280 Guided Learning Hours

The final unit of the qualification is to complete a practical assessment by grooming and styling one pure breed dog in the presence of an appointed AIM Assessor.  The date for this can be quite flexible and arranged nearer to the time of course completion. The Assessment will take place at Bubbles Dog Grooming for your convenience.

This is a mandatory 280 Guided Learning Hours course which can be attended on either a full time or flexible schedule (or a combination of both.) This is to ensure that it can work in tandem with your other commitments.  The Canine First Aid Certificate is included in the course fees.
